Control

A technical name for the element which is connected directly to the air tank, "regulation" of air pressure to breathe the same feeling that you are deep. You can sometimes hear these referred to as "Octopus" and saw no one connected to a tank, with all its various tubes dangled, it is easy to see why. Acomplete controller set-up includes:

1. Stage (from the magazine)

Second Primary Stage (which goes into the mouth)

air source, or secondary (similar to the second phase there will be primary and where the need to sub divide the air supply to others)

Inflator (required for attitude control with the addition of air-dress, a jacket or dry)

Console (usually the remaining air supply and Counterbut may include other items such as compasses or even computers)

Air Tank A couple of different names here for the same thing, "tank" or"cylinder", mean the same thing, these are simply a pressure proof container, either steel or aluminum which contain your breathing mixture (in this case air). There are pros and cons regarding the choice of material, but frankly most divers will never own a tank anyway, as this is normally rented at your destination.

Dive Computer As with all "toys" for sports, opinions vary wildly regarding the choice of computer, and as technology races ahead every day, the only smart advice is the most current, speak to your instructor, and look at other divers, most are very happy to explain why their computer is the best choice! My choice when I dived in a dry-suit was an Aladin, as it was nice and big, and easy to see. Once I progressed to warmer waters I was diving intensively and wanted a computer which I could never forget to take on a dive. I selected the Suunto Mosquito, as it is worn like a wrist watch and it kept track of all my nitrogen exposure over time, critical when I dived right on the limits of decompression every day.
