Kayak Fishing Accessories

Kayak fishing accessories are an absolute must whether you are braving the big blue or just venturing out on the local rivers. While the selection of accessories can be a bit overwhelming, there are a few basic necessities that you should have along.

Top Kayak Fishing Accessories

The first thing that you will need is a rod holder. There are many options available, but I prefer RAM holders. RAM rod holders have the benefit that if you need to quickly insert your rod for any reason, you can do so. This will allow you to quickly regain the use of your hands without losing your rod in the water!

A spray skirt is nice to have if you use a sit-inside kayak. A lot of people think this is only necessary if you are fishing on whitewater or a place with waves. They fail to consider boat wake. Listen, if there is any kind of boat traffic, then there is the chance that a wake will come along and surprise you. Having a spray skirt installed reduces the chance that you are going to lose your gear should you flip.

Some of the best kayak fishing accessories available are the ones that you make yourself. That's right, make your self. Seriously. Don't look at me like that!

You can add modifications to your kayak at assist you when fishing. Adding an anchor, crates for storing fish, a rudder system to navigate while using both hands fishing. Even a trailer to float behind to store some gear. Your imagination really is the limit.

You can even find some plans on the old internet for different accessories. Just do a quick search on kayak fishing accessory plans. These items are perfect for the DIY person.

If you don't fancy yourself making your own accessories, or don't have the time, there are plenty of options. Search some of the popular retailers or find a local club for ideas. You will be amazed at what you find out there!

Check Out Desperado Socks by NRS

Desperado Socks by NRS Review

I love these. This is my second pair. I had the last pair for 9 years. I used them as a videoboater on the Kennebec in Maine, on the Gauley in West Virginia, and playing on rivers in Chile and Costa Rica. They're great. I have huge feet (size 15) and the XXXL size fits me perfectly. Enough traction for running around on rocks, though not as much traction as regular shoes or booties. Plus they let you fit in your boat. Great.

Tips to Get Great Equipment For Outdoor Pursuits

With the popularity of outdoor sports increasing seemingly by the day, it seems like common sense that more and more kayak outriggers are coming onto the market in different materials and sizes. Canoe outriggers are also popular and can be found in several internet stores. But keeping this equipment safe and in good working order is also a very important point.

Since most of us are not lucky enough to live within easy reach of the water, it stands to reason that we will have to transport this equipment on top of our vehicles. However, if they are not secured properly, a lot of damage can be done by the wind constantly whipping the ends of the vessels and cracking the base material. This is not a good thing to do, obviously, since the equipment often becomes much loved pieces which we do not want to see damaged in any way.

Then of course are the paddles and equipment that often gets lost when the craft overturns in the water. By using different length leashes, this loss can be mitigated and many people have reported that they no longer lose their favorite paddles or pieces of equipment if they anchor them firmly before going out on the water.

Paddles too are quite important and are just not a shaft with a blade at either end. Different types of paddling denote which kind of paddle should be used as does the size of the craft which will be taken out. Height and weight of the person does actually make a difference to the size of paddle which should be used and it normally holds true that the taller the person is, the longer the paddle should be.

It is a similar idea when it comes to the width of the vessel too and the wider it is the longer the paddle so that the person does not have to bend over the side of the craft to reach the water.

Once the length of the paddle has been established, it is now time to pick out the shape of the blade. These come in several different forms to suit whichever style of paddling is going on. A wider and deeper paddle will certainly make the craft go faster at the beginning of the trip, but may end up being too heavy and tiring to keep up the same pace for very long. On the other hand, a narrower paddle may take more strokes to get to the destination but the person will not feel as tired since he has not had to work as hard.

If the river to be traversed is of the white water variety then many people will prefer the shorter paddle to allow them to move easily through tight corners and twists and turns. But no matter which ones are used, it is obvious that leashes should be used most of the time. Once the right paddle has been found, it becomes like a third hand and losing it is not an option for many.

Different Types of Kayak Paddles - European and Greenland Styles

One piece of equipment that every kayaker needs to have is a decent kayaking paddle. There are so many types of kayak paddles available on the market that the choices can be overwhelming. However, a few guiding principles can make finding the best paddle a breeze.

Two of the major types of kayak paddles are the European style paddle and the Greenland paddle. The European style paddle is the one most commonly seen in use today, and has a long cylindrical shaft and two roughly oval-shaped flat blades, one at each end of the shaft. The blades may be aligned with each other in the same plane, or they may be tilted with respect to each other. For example, one paddle blade may be tilted 45 degrees relative to the other blade.

This is called "feathering", and reduces the effect of wind blowing on the paddle blade that is in the air while the other blade is being stroked through the water. Since the blades are not lined up in the same plane, the paddle blade in the air is not facing into the wind, but cuts through it sideways. Many European style paddles are adjustable so that the amount of feather can be changed. Popular paddle manufacturers such as Werner, for example, make paddles that can adjust in small degree increments for up to 60 degrees of feathering.

Another feature of the European type kayak paddle is the drip ring. Each kayak paddle has two of these rubbery rings that are positioned around the shaft near where the blades are attached. The drip rings prevent water on the paddle blades from dripping down the shaft to the kayaker's hands during paddling. This keeps the kayaker's hands much drier and more comfortable. Even though the paddler's hands will probably still get wet, at least they are not constantly being soaked by cold water. The drip rings should ideally never enter the water, so that only the part of the paddle that is past the drip rings, which includes only the blade and a small part of the shaft, gets wet.

The Greenland paddle looks quite different from a European style paddle and is less often seen in use today. They are harder to find in stores as well, and are more of a specialty item sought out by kayakers who prefer them over the European paddles. A Greenland paddle has a shaft that is blended into the blades. Actually, it can be difficult at first glance to distinguish which part of the Greenland paddle is the blade and which is the shaft.

The paddle looks more like a long shaft that has been flattened at the ends. Many kayakers prefer the different paddling style that this design affords, and the paddle is well suited to performing rolls since it can be grasped anywhere along its length. Even though Greenland paddles are harder to find for sale, you can still find online retailers that carry them. You can also have the pleasure of trying out this unique paddle.

Emergency Supplies Everyone Needs Inside Their Vehicle

This winter I went to a neighboring city for the day. When I left home it was partly sunny and I thought a light sweater would be enough to wear for the day. At the last minute I did take my jacket. In two hours time the weather changed to blizzard conditions. It was snowing, blowing, and the electricity went out. Because of the storm I was a bit concerned and wondered if I would even be able to make it home because of the blizzard. I thought I had every thing in the trunk of my car I would need incase I couldn't make it home through the storm so I felt secure in being prepared, (or so I thought).

I checked the trunk when I got home and found I didn't have any emergency supplies. What a rude awakening for me. I had taken out my organizer with my first aid kit, blanket, emergency kit, everything else I had for emergencies and had never put them back.

This past week I was out of town and my daughter noticed one tire on my car had gone completely flat. I confidently told her to use the' fix a flat can' in the trunk to get my car to the shop to have it repaired. It is an inflator and sealer for tires. It is a foam, very easy to use and will allow you to drive on the tire for several miles until you can get the tire fixed. I had to use this product several years ago and I know it works. What peace of mind such a simple thing gives to me when I am driving in my car. I don't have to have a jack or tools and it seals and inflates in minutes.

No matter that the weather or circumstances it is a good idea to have some basic supplies in our vehicles. That means in very vehicle we or someone else in our family drives.

Here is a list of suggested supplies to keep in our vehicles in case of an emergency:

Booster cables and/or...A 3-in-1 12Volt power station. It includes,

1) an emergency jump start system;

2) a 12 volt DC power supply which is a portable power source for lights, radio, cell phones;

3) long-lasting illumination for roadside emergencies, work areas and camp sites.

Car Jack You may have to use it someday so it is important to know how to use it. (Actually practice changing a tire before an emergency arises).

Spare tire Check it monthly to make sure it is pumped up and in useable condition.

Fix A Flat in a can

A first aid kit.

Road Flares

There are roadside emergency kits you can buy that are ready to go.

A sleeping bag, blanket. I carried an old quilt in my trunk for years thinking it was warm. We had to put it to the test and found it was not warm at all. Select a blanket to keep you warm. It can also come in handy if you are changing a tire and have to lay down on the ground.
A flashlight that works, check to see if it the batteries are good every three months.
Water to drink

Sit down and think what you might need in case of a break down or an emergency when you are in your car and make up your own kit for your specific needs.

Keep everything organized in a container that fits your vehicle whether it is in a car trunk, jeep, truck, SUV or mini van. The peace of mind you will have from being prepared is worth its weight in gold.

The Ultimate Kayak Fishing Accessories

Whether you are planning to go out on the ocean, or just a smaller river system, there are a few kayak fishing accessories that you are going to have to have on your boat, before you can leave the docks. The first being a rod holder. I prefer to use RAM style rod holders because I can quickly insert the rod if I have to suddenly use my hands.

If you are using a sit inside fishing kayak, you are also going to want to install a nice spray skirt. These are used for whitewater fishing most of the time, but if the place you are going has decent waves, or a nice amount of boat traffic, you are likely to flip over at some point in time. Having a spray skirt will keep your gear inside the boat, and keep your boat empty of water at the same time.

The best kayak fishing accessories that anyone can have are ones that you have created yourself. You can modify your kayak with anything that you can design or think up. From anchor trolleys, fishing crates, kayak trailers, rudder systems, you name it, there is probably somebody out there who has already come up with an idea for it.

You can also purchase plans on the internet that have designs in them for all kinds of kayak fishing accessories. If you are the type to do it yourself, these guides are for you. If you would rather just pay to have the products sent to your house, that is fine too! Installing kayak accessories brings just as much satisfaction as designing them!

How to Buy a Kayak

So, the great outdoors is calling your name and for some strange reason your name now begins with kayak. Well, Kayak Joe, it's time to go looking for a kayak but you have no idea what to look for in a kayak or even what the differences are between kayaks. Herein we shall discuss what you need to look for before you buy a kayak.

But first, what kind of kayaking will you do? There's a kayak for every occasion and you need to know which one you need and what to look for in your kayak. Here are the different types and what to look for:

1) Recreational kayaks: These are your all round, can be used for just about anything kayak and a great style for a beginner. These are used for mild river trips and casual use in ponds and bays. They are generally wider and shorter than other kayaks, which make them easier to handle and turn.

2) Touring kayak: These are designed for extended wilderness travel. These types are very long and have a good deal of area for storage of supplies needed on a long trip. These track well, or move in a straight line, but because of their extended length, are harder to turn. There are versions made for just day touring and these have less space but are made of lighter materials for better handling.

3) Whitewater kayaks: This is what most people think of when they think kayak. Tearing down some rapids, water splashing everywhere and a lot of speed and danger. These are shorter to increase the maneuverability of the kayak around rocks and in fast moving water. They may have rounded bottoms and more upturned ends to deal with the waves. They are hard to paddle in a straight line and are not recommended for casual kayaking.

4) Downriver kayaks: These are specially designed to travel quickly and smoothly through the water. These are normally used for racing as they are very long and narrow which makes them tipsy and not very much suited for a novice kayaker. They are very long and straight, which makes them go in a straight line easily; however, turning is more difficult.

When you buy a kayak, you must consider how you will use it. If you are going for easy little day trips in a calm river or braving the roar of the rapids. You will also need to consider if you will be turning a lot, how fast you need the boat to be and the boats volume. The volume relates to how much stuff you can store in your kayak when you take it out. The more stuff you need to bring, the more volume it needs.

Lastly, the shape of the boat is important to consider. You will want to talk to your kayak store specialist and let them know exactly how you intend to use your kayak and how skilled you are. You will also need to get gear for yourself including a helmet, lifejacket, clothing, first aid gear and waterproof bags for any electronic devices you may need.

Good construction, bad sizing and shape - domeboy - Rochester, New York United States
PROS: Good materials and finishing, light, strap nicely adjustable

CONS: Helmet sizing charts (see Protech web site) are a little off. Using their charts, i determined my son, my wife and I could all wear larges. After receiving the helmets, I ended up having to get a medium for my son and an XL for myself. Part of the reason is simply that the helmet shells are misformed for the average head. It is too short from front to back, so it creates pressure on your forhead and back of head. Uncomfortable to say the least. I have helmets from Giro, Trek and Specialized and they all fit great, so its not our heads!

I'm going to try and heat one up to see if I can reshape it a bit, otherwise I need to sell these on Ebay and get something that isn't deformed.
