Crafting Your Own DIY Raft

Being the simple water vessel that it is, building a raft out of equally simple materials is no complicated tasks given that one knows the precise steps of constructing one.

The raft has always been one of man's trustiest vessels in carrying him across bodies of water. Distinguished by its lack of a hull, which is something that most of other boats have, it is perhaps the most basic among all of the water vessels that man has ever made. Even though, the raft has always been one of the most used boat-type for travel over water as its simplicity makes it one of the easiest floating structure to craft since one only needs everyday materials and the essential know-how to construct the raft.

To build one's own DIY raft, one needs the following materials: a decking, some screws and bolts, a ratchet, some marine foam, some pressure treated lumber with some sawed into sizes of 2 x 10", and some paper and pencil. For the tools, one needs a circular saw (though table saw will suffice), a drill with a full bit set, a hammer, and a knife.

To start building the raft, one first needs to determine what size and weight one's raft will be. Building a heavy and large raft will be obviously more durable as far as traversing the waters is concerned but constructing a lightweight and small one will enable one to easily transport the raft from one body of water to another. It is entirely up to one's preferences as the building procedure will be the same no matter what one opts to construct.

Start the actual construction by cutting some of the 2 x 10" boards into half and then attaching them to full-length 2 x 10" boards with a blocking of 2 x 4". Screw the pieces together with marine or galvanized iron screws coupled with the use of countersinks. After this, attach the side boards to the 2 x 4" blocking at the raft's middle and the third positions. With some screws and blocking, fasten four side walls together. Locate the floor joists in the raft and cut them to 7' in length. 2 x 10" board sections are then attached from center point to center point all across the box. One can now fasten the floor joists as needed.

The marine foam now can be cut and attached to the spaces present between the joists. Apart from filling in the spaces, foams also add to the buoyancy of the raft, an aspect that is crucial in all floating devices. As with all foaming materials, a hotwire or a knife is the perfect cutting tool.

After the essential parts of the raft have been built, one can now turn to the decking. Like the weight and height of the raft, constructing the decking rests mainly upon one's preferences in the weight, durability, and practicability aspects of one's raft.

Building one's own raft is an easy project to accomplish as long as one has sufficient supply of the necessary materials and the requisite expertise for building simple structures such as the raft.

Fix it Yourself and Skip the Labor Fees

If you are like most people, you like to do most things for yourself instead of trusting others to do things for you. When you fix it yourself and skip the labor fees you are, saving money as well as you know, the job is, done right.

Fixing your own car is not that big of a deal, unless it is a major kind of repair. If it is a major repair then you will have to let the experts fix it. Otherwise, fix the problems yourself.

You can go to the automotive parts store and buy a repair book for the year make and model of your car or truck. This repair manual will help to walk you step by step through any kind of minor and some major repairs that you may need to do to fix your car or truck yourself.

You will need a good set of sockets, metric, and standard, as well as a good set of open-end box end wrenches. If you should need anything else then the manual will list the tools needed for the repairs.

With the repair manual, you can fix things like water pumps, replace thermostats, breaks, change the oil, and find things like the starter and fuses on your car. Some of these manuals include diagrams and detailed instructions to walk you through each step during the repair.

By using, the manual to fix it yourself and skip the expensive labor fees you are saving a load of money on the labor the mechanic will charge. Most of the licensed mechanics start at $ 80.00 dollars or more per hour and go up. Then on top of the labor, you also must pay for the parts that the mechanics have to rebuild or replace.

Moreover, you must be, careful to choose a reputable mechanic that will indeed fix the problem and not rook you into paying for repairs that were not, done. Fit it yourself, skip the expensive labor fees, and know that the job is, done the right way.

The manual will not only help you to do the repairs it will also save you money. Furthermore, it will teach you how to do the repairs so incase you have the same problem in the future you will know what to do. This will be an incredible help to you.

Elementary Bicycle Maintenance - Tires, Tubes and Wheels

If you ride a bicycle the chances are that some day at some point it will break. In fact I received a program the other day on a CD called Ride it Break it Fix it which is all about repairing and maintaining a good functioning bicycle.

There are those people that ride bicycles that have no desire to learn how to repair them, but even those people should know how to do some simple maintenance, fix a flat or do other minor repairs.

I personally have ridden a bicycle as much as 120 Miles in 1 day. I put between 2000 and 3000 miles on my bike annually, so I need to be able to do some minor repairs with minimal tools when out away form my home base. Many recreational riders will not need to have as in depth knowledge as a person that rides as often or as much as I do, however they should still know a few things. This report will help you decide what you should know based on your mechanical ability and riding style.

Anyone that rides alone should know at least how to fix a flat tire. If you always ride with a group or you always ride with a partner, especially if your ride with a partner that is very mechanical you may be able to get by without this knowledge. You should still know how to check the tire pressure and what it should be. Most of the time you will find the recommended tire pressure right on the side of the tire. Check the tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge, not by the feel of the tire. Some tubes have Presta Valves, some have Schrader Valves, and make sure you know which one you have. Most of the pumps in the US are made for Schrader and unless you have an adapter with you or your companion does, you may be out of luck even if you have a new tire and tube.

You can purchase at most bike shops and at most online bike stores such as Bike Nashbar, Bikmania, and Performance Bike a small device that pumps up bike tires using a CO2 cylinder. These take a while to get used to using, so buy some extra cartridges, you are very likely to drain the first few without getting anything in the tire itself.

It is best if you always carry an extra tube, or at the very least a patch kit. I have found that patching a Mountain Bike Tube seems to work, patching a road bike tube appears to be an exercise in futility. Your best bet if you ride a road bike is to carry an extra tube, and unless you are very good with the CO2 inflator, get a frame pump. I have had to carry my road bike for a few miles one time and now I always carry a new tube.

Here's something no one ever tells you that could save you a real headache. In order to replace the tube you need to take the old tube out of the tire and after you do check the tire itself by running something along the inside. If you feel anything check to make sure it is not the cause of the blowout, glass or a tack can get stuck in the tire, if you put the new tube in a tire that has some sort of foreign object going through it then the new tube will get flattened also.

Also before you put the new tube in, blow it up and make sure there are no kinks. You don't have to blow it up too much, just enough to get the kinks out that are there from it being folded up in the box, or wrapped in a bag. Check also that the new tube has no leaks. I have had a few brand new tubes that had bad valves, or even holes in them. I have also had tubes literally explode after they were placed in the tire. The exploding tube can often be avoided by making sure the tube is not twisted inside the tire. The narrower tires that use the Presta Valve are the most likely to have the problem. Install them carefully and make sure that there are no foreign objects in your tire.

If you have quick release hubs on your bike then you won't need any wrenches to remove the wheel from the bike. For most bikes you will need a wrench to remove the wheels from the bike itself. A set of tire removal tools are invaluable for changing a tube. I have one that I bought in Arizona back about 20 years ago. It does not need to be fancy, the best one I have looks like a plastic screwdriver with a strange head on it. I also have some Maxxis Tools that my grandson Jason won at McDonough Georgia at a BMX Race. He picked up some Maxxis tires that day too.

Once you have replaced the tube and repaired the flat and have put the tire back on the bike you should check the wheel for True. That simply means that when you spin the wheel does it wobble back and forth or does the brake pads or the fork stay the same distance from the side of the tire all the way around?

Some of the causes of wobble can be a broken or weak spoke. It also can be that the tire is not centered or that the quick release has not been tightened properly. You can ride a bike for a while with a wheel that is out of true, but you should have it checked and repaired at a shop very soon after finding the problem. If you have a broken spoke or a bent spoke, you should have the bike checked by a competent shop ASAP. If it is a matter of the wheel is incorrectly seated or the quick release not being tightened simply re-seat the wheel or tighten the quick release.

I plan to make a series of these reports on various aspects of bike repair and maintenance and will possibly be doing some videos that relate to these reports.

How to Find Timely Breakdown Services

Over the past 5 to 7 years, availability of quality breakdown services has increased manifold. The industry has amassed high returns over these years and is fast expanding to meet its demand side. There is a constant demand for roadside breakdown services especially in crowded cities. However, many of these services are finding it hard to track their customers. Most the times, people don't know what to do when their vehicle experiences some serious trouble. Their first response would be seeking help from nearby locals. This is the most obvious remedy and it is helpful in finding nearest roadside repair services. But how fast one can find a breakdown service in case of an emergency depends on the locality.

If your car breaks down at some godforsaken place, there is no way to get some quick help. In such cases, the only option is to call the authorities or some nearest helpline who would send in some kind of assistance or forward you to the nearest service agency. If you are having some kind of portable internet devices, you can search for nearby breakdown services and call them up directly. This is a most feasible option if manage to connect with a repair service located within a short range. The problem arises when your vehicle needs some serious repair or replacement. In such cases, you will be left looking for an alternative means of transport to get to the nearest destination. Certainly your breakdown service mechanic will guide you out the spot. You will be required to leave your car or vehicle with the breakdown service. Thereupon it is their responsibility to haul it to their workshop and get it back on the road again.

Many established car manufacturers install their breakdown services across the country so as to assist their customers in case of a sudden breakdown. They offer their helpline numbers for the customers to call in for all kinds of assistance. The charges associated with such services depend on the company's indigenous rules and policies. It also depends on how new or old your vehicle is and the nature of insurance you got for the same.

There are special breakdown repair covers offered by motor insurance companies for helping their customers in case of an unexpected breakdown. The terms and conditions of the policy vary depending on the company rules and nature of the coverage. In case of a breakdown you can call your insurance agent for quick assistance. He would send for help or contact the nearby service center for direct assistance. They would also arrange for a replacement vehicle depending on the agreement. By insuring your vehicle under a breakdown repair cover, you will be able to cover a substantial portion of your total loss.

Storing a Car - Steps You Need to Know

Storing a car seems like it would be the simplest thing in the world. Just drive the car into a garage, maybe throw a car cover over it and call it a day. Well, taking this approach is going to result in a lot of problems. A car is a mechanical vehicle, which means it needs some love and care.

The first step is to make sure all the fluids are both new and topped up. This includes...well, everything. You should replace and top off the coolant, hydraulics and engine oil. You might even consider the brake fluid if it has been some time. Why is this necessary? Your car is designed to function, not to sit. Many of the systems are built with tolerances that assume you will run the car regularly. When you don't, the system starts to fall apart because air in it will oxidize and destroy everything from seals to rubber parts.

The second step is to deal with your fuel system. The obvious answer is to fill your gasoline tank to the very top. Before you do this, however, you need to buy fuel stabilizer from the local auto parts store. Fuel molecules tend to degrade over time and oxidize. If your fuel goes bad, your car won't start. If you are really unlucky, it will damage the fuel system and even the engine. Fuel stabilizer is an additive that contains chemicals that prevent the gasoline from breaking down. Use it!

The next step is to clean the car inside and out till it looks new. This may seem counter productive given the fact you are throwing it into storage where it will get dusty and so on. The truth of the matter is you are really trying to avoid mold and mildew problems. Dust will not cause this, but contaminants that were in the car when stored may very well.

Now we can start the storage process. Your first move is to get a waterproof barrier wrap. Lay it out in the storage area and drive the car onto it. This wrap will keep water vapor from rising up under the car and will also keep car fluids from staining the area. Once the car is positioned, place it on jacks so that the car is completely suspended in the air. This will save your shocks, suspension and tires. Fire up the car and then cut the electrical connection to the fuel pump. When the car dies, the fuel system will be empty and ready for storage. The final step is just to walk around the car and seal all entry points that small animals can get into. Duct tape your exhaust pipe opening to prevent anything from getting up in there.

Now you are in the final stretch. Make sure the transmission is in neutral and the brakes are released so they don't fuse while in storage. Pop the trunk or hood as appropriate and pull out the battery for independent storage. Finally, pull the waterproof wrap on the ground up and secure around the bottom of the car. Now put a quality car cover over the top.

It may seem like a lot of work to store a car, but it is work well worth it. When it is time to fire up your car again, everything should be ready to go with a minimum of fuss.

Great Price Milton S506 for $35.04

Milton Dual Chuck Tire Inflator With Gauge Review

I remember this air chuck from when I was a kid filling up my bike tires & parents car.
It was so easy & quick to fill & check air presser with this gage
You don't see many used any more because people steal them!!
So gas stations get tired of replacing them...
I bought a small air compressor for my garage last year and use it for filling my auto & bike tires
So when I was filling with the air chuck, then checking with the presser gage I though I must see how much one of those cool air chuck / presser gages I used to use at the local gas station cost.
If you have a small air compressor for your garage and use it for your auto, bike
I think it is well worth the money.
The unit is very well built out of solid aluminum and gives a accurate reading too.

I recently purchased a new air compressor for home and stumbled upon this product on Amazon. I can't say enough good things about it. It is a great American made tool! If you have a compressor and fill your cars, truck, or cycle's tires you need one of these great inflator/gauges.

This is by far the best tire inflator you can purchase. First off, it is well built, soild body and it looks good. Next, the dial gauge is on point every use. If it ever jumps off into left field, that lets me know theres something wrong with the valve core. I give this product 5stars anyday.

Pelican Kayaks - Great Entry Level Kayaks

If you are a recreational kayaker, or new to the sport, you might not have a lot of money to spend on a new kayak and would prefer a more modestly priced entry-level model. You may have looked at used kayaks but you would prefer not to take the risk of someone else's possibly damaged kayak. If this is you, a good choice might be a Pelican Kayak.

Pelican has made a business out of designing and selling well-built entry-level kayaks. They might not be in the same class as the sleeker models put out by other manufacturers; a Pelican Kayak is still a very good choice for those just starting out. These kayaks are really good for flat-water creeks and lakes, and since they are below $300 they won't break the bank either!

Pelican specializes in entry-level kayaks that are either sit-in or sit-on-top models and come in a wide variety of configurations. The 3-layer molded design is extremely strong, impact resistant, and has good rigidity. These Kayaks are not as light as those made with composite materials, Kevlar, or even fiberglass, but they are strong enough to last for many years and provide enjoyment with typical use.

For sit-in kayaks, they have a model that is excellent for touring called the Persuit; one type of kayak that is designed mostly for sporting or fishing called the Getaway; and one that is designed more for recreational use called the Sport 94.

If you are more interested in the sit-on-top variety of kayak, Pelican offers the Zest and Viper models for recreational use; the Apex for touring; and the Castaway for sporting and fishing.

If you are more interested in using your kayak on family adventures, Pelican does offer recreational kayaks family use. These complement people with a wide variety of skill levels. The SOT models come with open cockpits. They also include built-in flotation, and have a reasonable amount of storage capacity. The Pelican sporting models are great platforms for fishing and have more than enough storage capacity.

Finally their touring models, which might not be the first choice if you those die-hard paddlers, are just fine for those who are on shorter trips on flat water.

Whatever your choice, Pelican kayaks are an excellent choice for the beginner or recreational kayaker.
